My wife and I purchased it almost 25 years ago: a time when thatched dwellings in Ireland were rapidly disappearing. It seemed that nobody wanted them - they were far too much trouble to own. A widespread feeling about them was encapsulated in the words of one of my new neighbours: |
"Would you not throw down that old thatch and build yourself a decent house in the field behind it?" |
| Thatchers' Nook | We didn't "throw down that old thatch"! We had purchased it to preserve it. Little did we know then how time-consuming and expensive the process would be. But then again, it was a labour of love. So much so that, today, we are very protective of our thatched house and we are extraordinarily proud of it too. |
And that's what the Irish Thatch Owners Forum is all about: It's about creating a forum for thatch owners to help each other to protect, and be proud of their own thatched properties. |
