My name is

I own a thatched cottage in Bridgetown, Co. Wexford

My wife and I purchased it almost 25 years ago: a time when thatched dwellings in Ireland were rapidly disappearing. It seemed that nobody wanted them - they were far too much trouble to own.

A widespread feeling about them was encapsulated in the words of one of my new neighbours:

"Would you not throw down that old thatch and build yourself a decent house in the field behind it?"
Thatchers' Nook

We didn't "throw down that old thatch"! We had purchased it to preserve it. Little did we know then how time-consuming and expensive the process would be.

But then again, it was a labour of love. So much so that, today, we are very protective of our thatched house and we are extraordinarily proud of it too.

And that's what the Irish Thatch Owners Forum is all about:

It's about creating a forum for thatch owners to help each other to protect, and be proud of their own thatched properties.
